The Scoop on September 1st, 2005

This Week At The Place

This Sabbath Pastor Simon will be preaching at The Place. Pastor Simon will continue his series on relationships. The title of his sermon is "Mission Possible." Next Sabbath will be the last in this series and we will look forward to our new series focusing on falling in love with Jesus in the gospels.

Elder Rob Randall will be leading out in the adult Sabbath School that meets at 10:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. They are exploring the book of Acts.

The Discipleship group will meet this Sabbath for Sabbath School. The Discipleship group is going over the book, The Life You've Always Wanted. This week's chapter, chapter 11, focuses on reflecting on scripture. We are almost finished with this book as well. Our next one will be Lifestyle Evangelism by Joe Aldrich. If you have ever wanted to learn how to share your faith in every day life, please plan on being part of this new discipleship series!

Bike/ Hike-This Sabbath Afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

This Sabbath afternoon, September 3rd, there will be a bike/hike down Sycamore Canyon. The bike hike is 8 miles long and will begin at 4 p.m. Ralph Figueroa and Brandon Lew will be heading this trek on Labor Day weekend......bring your family out for an afternoon of fun! Directions will be available at church for those who need help finding the starting line.

Beach Vespers Next Friday Night

As the sun continues to shine on Southern California, we are continuing to worship together on a monthly basis at the beach. Our next beach vespers is Friday night, September 9th, at Sycamore Cove at 6:30 pm. We have been so blessed as have fellowshipped and worshipped together and we look forward to another blessed time with our God and one another. As usual, we will eat together, sing and share, pray and praise our God. All are invited!

Baby Shower

There will be a baby shower on Sunday, September 11th to welcome little Lilliana Meletis, daughter to Angelo and Sally Baher. Lilliana was born on August 1st and is registered at Babies R' Us.

The shower will be held at the Lew's home in Newbury Park from 10-12 a.m. and is a ladies only event. Please R.S.V.P to Jenn Lew at 805-498-0905 by next Thursday, September 8th. We look forward to showering our love on the Baher's!

Beach Day/Youth Water Ski Trip

We will be having our next Social event on Sunday, September 18th. This will be our first annual Beach Day! Our day will begin at 11:00 a.m. and go until 4 p.m. (or as late as you'd like to stay). Bring your swimsuits, suntan lotion, and beach balls, to beach for a day of fun and fellowship. Volleyball and other games are also on the agenda! Drinks and chips will be provided but please bring your lunches. We look forward to seeing you there! Directions will be available next Sabbath.

And, in an amazing coincidence, the youth will be having their very own water ski trip on the same Sunday, Sept. 18th. The Roths and Nomelli's are leading out this fun in the sun. Everyone had such a wonderful time last year that we are looking forward to another great day of muscle stretching and face planting. Put the date down and stay tuned for details.

Disaster Relief for Katrina Victims

As you all know, thousands of people are suffering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States of Louisana and Mississippi. Many are homeless and without food or medical supplies. The Adventist Community Services department (part of ADRA) has been very active this week in deploying volunteers to distribute non-perishable food items, clothing, bedding, and needed medical supplies. If you would like to assist ACS in their relief efforts, we strongly encourage you to give by logging on to www.communityservices.org or by calling 877 - ACS - 2702. Or you may contact them if you are interested in volunteering in any capacity.

Also, you may have another favorite charity that is involved in this relief effort...if so, don't delay. The need is great.

Children's Church & Monthly Food Drive

Our next Children's church is scheduled for next Sabbath, September 10th. During children's church, the tots learn about Christ through a Veggietales curriculum that incorporates song, story, games, crafts and snacks. Next week's leader will be Jenn Lew. Children's church meets from 11:30- 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship Hall.

We will also be having our monthly food drive next Sabbath. The Ventura County Food Share has truly appreciated The Place's donations over the summer months when donations have been down. They are thankful that we continue to show we care by giving each month. Next Sabbath we will have our monthly food drive for the Ventura County Food Share. There will be a box in the lobby where you may place your donations. Proverbs 22:9 "A good man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor." If you, your family or someone you know, needs food assistance, please contact Pastor Simon.

Money Matters & Student Aid

Yes, it is true...the school year is starting. For the past couple years we have been able to assist several families at The Place with financial aid to help their children attend our local SDA schools, Conejo Adventist Elementary School and Newbury Park Adventist Academy.

And, once again, we would like to be able to help families who would like some financial assistance for this current school year. But, you need to let us know how we can help. Starting this Sabbath, we will have applications for student financial assistance available in the lobby at The Place. If you would like to apply, pick one up and contact Pastor Simon or the chairman of our Finance Committee Geoff Wolcott at gnwolcott@yahoo.com.

And, as always, we appreciate your financial support at The Place! While we try not to push for money...we always need your faithful support of our ministry at our church and in our community.

As a reminder, you may give at The Place or online at tithe.theplacechurch.com.
