The Scoop at The Place - November 13, 2008

This Week at The Place

We look forward to seeing you this coming Sabbath at The Place. This Sabbath Elder Rob Randall will be preaching. Rob will continue with the series "Don't Worry, Be Happy". This week's sermon is focused on James 1 and talks about our perspectives. We look forward to having Chad Reisser lead us in praise and worship as well as special music by Pastor Steve. We also welcome the CAES choirs to The Place and look forward to hearing them.

We also invite you to Sabbath school starting at 10:30 a.m. We have several classes ranging from cradle roll class to adult classes, including a new adult Sabbath School class for new believers as well as those wishing to refresh on Christian doctrines and teachings. We have something for everyone! We hope you’ll stop by and be blessed.

Our prayer committee meets every Sabbath morning starting at 9:45 a.m. to pray for individual as well as community needs. If you are interested, please join us this Sabbath.

And, your tithes and offerings are always a blessing. We thank you for your faithfulness in giving. You can return your tithes and offerings at The Place or by clicking on the link below.

Fellowship Lunch This Sabbath after Church

We invite you all to our monthly fellowship luncheon THIS Sabbath, November 15th following church services in the Fellowship Hall. This month's theme is "international cuisine" and will be hosted by Alicia Adams. We hope that you will come and fellowship with us. This will be a potluck, so please bring food to share. You are also welcome to help set up prior to the luncheon or assist in the clean up portion of it.

The Place Community Service: Blanket Drive This Sabbath & Community Christmas Shoppe on 12/13
We are having a hand-made blanket drive for the homeless shelters in Simi Valley. There are 7 different places (mainly churches) that take the homeless in for one night a week from November to March. This year they are expecting 33% more people to come to the shelters. The shelters are in need of 50 blankets. If you would like to donate a hand-made blanket, please bring it THIS Sabbath, November 15th. There will be a box in the back of church. If you took a "No Sew" blanket kit, please return the blanket that you made this Sabbath.

The Place will be participating in the annual Community Christmas Shoppe on December 13 at the Newbury Park First Christian Church. This is a Christian outreach to underprivileged families in our community sponsored by area churches. Children will enjoy a festive Christmas event with fun activities while their parents shop for free, choosing gifts with their children’s needs in mind. You can help by bringing new, unwrapped gifts for boys and girls, infant to teenage. There is a collection box by the door. Volunteers are also needed and you can sign up online at actionvc.org. See the back table for more detailed information. Contact: Joyce Thomsen 805 377-8892

The Place Big Give Challenge

Some time ago we challenged members at The Place with an offer of $100 as “seed money” to use in our community. This is an opportunity for us to be creative and make a difference. The money is to be used to either begin something new in our community or as seed money to make more money for a charity or need in our community or around the world. Five people have taken us up on the offer. Brice Peterson and family are collecting used Bibles for Africa; Crystal Moon is selling cookies to raise money for Children at Simi Valley Hospital, and Denise Ramirez and family are raising money for a camp that gives disadvantaged kids a chance to ride horses. Cindy Schumacher and Sandy Duarte are raising money for supplies for homeless shelters in Simi Valley; and Donna Goldman is buying See's Candy for re-sale to raise money for needy families. Just think BIG!! If you have ideas, please talk to Pastor Simon if you are ready for your $100!!

As part of this challenge, the Peterson family in conjunction with the T.O. Pathfinder Club and The Place are collecting 10,000 bibles for Christians in Africa and South America. We solicit your help with donations of new or used bibles or funds to purchase them by August 2009. Contact 805-953-9416 or email greengirl02@gmail.com for details. Feel free to bring the Bibles to church!

Fiji 2009

We have a site and a date secured for next year's mission trip. We will be doing a project in Fiji and the projected dates are July 30-August 9, 2009. This project will include construction of some kind, evangelistic meetings, children's programs, and medical, dental and eye clinics. These are mission project trips in which people from all ages will have an opportunity to work together, pray together, and share God's love with others--together. The participation fee of $650 includes food, lodging and possibly a group excursion. The cost will be airfare plus the $650. Contact Pastor Simon if you are interested in participating. There will also be an interest list/sign up sheet this Sabbath in the lobby.

Small Group Invite

The Roeske/Jackson Small Group (dedicated study for families with school age children) has made an impact on two students. Giovanna and Leonardo Alves recently shared with their mother Lillian that they feel a part of the church body because of the fun and bible discussions they experience with their group. The power of small group is alive and well and It’s amazing to hear the blessings of children wanting to grow in the word of God!
