The Scoop at The Place - December 27, 2007

This Week At The Place
We look forward to celebrating the last Sabbath of 2007 with you this week. This Sabbath Pastor Simon will be preaching at The Place. This week's sermon is titled "The Indescribable Gift" and focuses on the gift of Jesus in 2 Corinthians chapter 9. This week Aaron Doyle will be leading praise and worship.

We invite you to Sabbath School this week. We have children's Sabbath Schools for all ages, including our cradle roll, kindergarten, primary, junior/earliteen, and youth Sabbath school classes that meet at 10:30 a.m. If you have any old DVDs or CDs that you would like to donate to our newly forming children's media library, we would be very appreciative! The media library would give children an opportunity to view and/or listen to different movies and music and then return them for other ones. Please contact Lilian Alves @310-948-6476.

Elder Rob Randall will be leading the adult Sabbath school which is studying the book of Romans. Stop by and be blessed!

You are also invited to attend our community prayer time at The Place every Sabbath before Sabbath School starting at 9:45 a.m. If you would like to pray for our church and our community or if you would like to be prayed for, we invite you to come and share in this powerful time together.

Baptisms Next Month
We are so happy to announce that we have three baptisms scheduled for Sabbath, January 12th: Donna Goldman, and Jim & Rosa Brewster. It is a blessing to welcome new members to our Place and to continue to grow together in God's spirit. The baptisms and monthly fellowship luncheon will take place at Jenny Kay Dappalonia's home in Newbury Park. If you are interested in studying the bible or in getting baptized, please contact Pastor Simon or Pastor Steve.

Happy New Year & A Focus on 2008
We would like to wish you and yours a Happy New Year. As this year comes to an end, we want to thank so many of you who have contributed in one way or another to the The Place during 2007. Your time, creativity, offerings, and presence have made such a difference. We look forward to growing as a community in Christ in 2008.

To help make 2008 a fantastic year of spiritual growth, we have some new things planned for the new year. There will be a ten week discipleship class starting in January with Pastor Simon focusing on "Learning To Let God's Word Speak To You". You may sign up with Pastor Simon or at The Place.
There will also be a six week class starting in January with Bill Werner on - "Learning Your Spiritual Gifts & How To Get Involved in Ministry".

And, there will also be a seminar on prayer and overcoming temptation and spiritual warfare with Ray Beeson scheduled for the first week in February.

Youth & Young Adult Ski Trip Day
The youth and young adult small groups are taking a break during the holidays and will start again in the new year. But, there is something to look forward to...there will be ski/snowboard day at Big Bear Mountain on Wednesday, January 2nd, from 5am - 10pm. The group will leave from the Newbury Park Academy Parking Lot. YOU MUST BE SIGNED UP IN ADVANCE TO HAVE A SPOT RESERVED, AS WELL AS A SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP! The cost is $53 per/person. Prayer 24/7
For those of you who are not in the know, The Place has begun a new prayer ministry that goes 24/7. Our goal is to have someone praying for our church community and special needs and requests on an ongoing 24/7 basis. If you would like to sign up, please do so in the lobby this Sabbath. Thanks! And, of course, we invite you to pray for our church, our members, and our community. In particular, please pray for those who are looking for jobs during this time.

And, for those of you who enjoyed Hilary Watson's music a few Sabbath's ago and purchased her CD, please don't forget to contact Brendon or Jennifer Lew with the $10. Thanks.

End Of Year Giving
During this holiday season, we thank you so much for your continued generosity and faithful tithing and donations. We are now using a new online donation program through Adventistgiving.org. This new program does not charge us a fee, so, please feel free to return your donations online to The Place. As we approach the end of the year, we want to remind you that this is your last chance to donate any monies and receive a tax deduction. We have several areas of need: our associate pastor fund, our needy family fund, and our worthy student fund. Thank you again for your faithfulness!

Simon's Wish List

This Week At The Place/Merry Christmas!!!
We would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas. We look forward to celebrating this joyous Christmas holiday with you this Sabbath at The Place.

This Sabbath we have a special Christmas program planned. Our theme "Twas The Night After Christmas" will include a sermonette given by Pastor Simon, a children's story by Cecilia Liversidge, the leading of Christmas carols by Chad Reisser, musical numbers by Alexandra Randall, Courtney Crook and Laura Jacobsen, Matt Fowler & Robin Shea, Xavier Lemond, Shearin Matute, Jabari Washington, as well as the children's choir from the Place. There will also be a drama with Aaron & Rebecca Altman and Walter Hamlin..and more! We invite you to stay after church for snacks and refreshments as the Cafe will be open.

Friday Night Vespers & Communion This Week
We will be having our special Christmas vespers this Friday night, December 21st at The Place starting at 7:30 p.m. Please come and celebrate the Christmas season with us. Ralph Figueroa will lead our praise band as we share the Christmas story together and celebrate the birth of our Savior. We will also be celebrating communion together. Refreshments and snacks will also be served after services. We look forward to seeing you!

Book Inserts
For those of you who took a colored 6X6 card to write a positive inspirational message or note for Erik Kalberg, please bring it to church this weekend (December 22) and give them to Heidi Figueroa, Cecilia Liversidge or turn it in at the basket provided. We want to make sure that everyone is able to express their hope and prayers for Erik. These cards will be placed in a book and given to the Kalberg family for Christmas.

If you have not yet picked up a colored 6X6 card, you will have an opportunity to write a message this Sabbath and then turn it in at the basket provided the same day (December 22nd).

This Week At The Place/New Online Giving!

Fellowship Luncheon This Sabbath

Friday Night Communion & Vespers-Next Week
We will be having our monthly vespers next Friday night, December 21st at The Place. It will be a special night as we will be celebrating Christmas together. We will have a band leading praise with Christmas carols, a time of worship, and communion. Refreshments and snacks will also be served after services. We look forward to seeing you!

Community Service Projects
The Community Christmas Shoppe last Sabbath was a big success. We helped serve approximately 240 families in need through this event. It was a fun filled day with lots of activities for the kids as the parents shopped for their presents. Thanks to everyone who contributed toys and clothing items. A big thank you to the amazing volunteers who sponsored collection boxes, helped with the set up and the event itself. It was truly a blessing to be part of this community outreach as we reached out in love and service.

Youth & Young Adult Stuff-Young Adult XMAS Party This Saturday Night
Youth:
Thursdays: Small group bible study is scheduled for this Thursday, December 13th at its regular time.
Sabbath mornings: Sabbath School IS HAPPENING, so please feel free to wake up EARLY and come start the day with your friends (and Pastor Steve ;-).

Young Adults:

The mommies ministry will be having its annual Christmas celebration this coming Sunday morning, December 16th. This year's festivities will be held at Jolene Roeske's home in Westlake Village. The gathering will begin at 11 a.m. and will consist of a brunch and gift exchange. You may sign up to bring food with Cecilia at cecilialiversidge@hotmail.com and the limit for the gift exchange is $15. We look forward to this time together.

This Week At The Place

This coming Sabbath, Newbury Teen Power of the Newbury Park Academy will be taking our worship service and Ryan Dolinsky will be preaching. Steve Jackson will be leading praise and worship. We invite you to stay after services as our cafe will be open for snacks and refreshments.

We will have children's church this Sabbath and Meg Quilop is this month's leader. We invite the kids to come out and enjoy a great time of worship.

Christmas Shoppe This Sabbath
Our Christmas shoppe is scheduled for this coming Sabbath. Please bring an unwrapped gift to church to donate to the shoppe. Many of you have volunteered already (thank you), but if you have not yet done so and would like to, please contact Joyce Thomsen at october5@aol.com or by phone at (805) 498-0246. Also, if you know of a family that needs assistance and would like to be able to participate, please contact Joyce as well. Thank you so much for your support which means so more than just providing gifts, it's an outreach with the love of Jesus to these families in our community.

The Place Progressive Party This Saturday Night
The holidays are once again upon us and we look forward to celebrating with you. Our annual Place Progressive party is scheduled for this Saturday evening, December 8th. Our progressive party is a three part dinner held at three different homes (appetizers & salads, entrees, dessert and ornament exchange). We invite you to participate in this festive night, and please bring an ornament for the exchange during the third and final portion of the party. The appetizers will be hosted at 5:00 p.m. by Deane and Elvina Wolcott (3216 Casino Drive in Thousand Oaks), the entrees will be hosted by Alan & Christa Reinach at 6:00 p.m. (163 Castillian Avenue in Newbury Park), and the dessert and ornament exchange portion of the party will be hosted by Jeremy & Edna Bachmann at 7:00 p.m. (837 Blue Springs Drive in Westlake Village). There will be a flyer in the lobby this Sabbath that will have all the details and directions. Please plan on spending this awesome time together...and invite a friend!

Fellowship Luncheon Next Sabbath
Our fellowship luncheon is scheduled for next Sabbath, December 15th. We invite you to stay after church services for lunch and fellowship. This month's theme is Christmas foods and this month's host is Sally Baher. If you would like to sign up to bring something, please contact Sally at baher@sbcglobal.net. Thanks for your cooperation.

Hot Flashers Adventure Group & Small Groups
The next Hot Flasher's move night will be this coming Sunday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Dappolonia "Hospital" located at 180 Via Rebecca in Newbury Park. Please come dressed as a doctor, nurse, x-ray tech, patient...... or just wear a holiday sweater. Bring a favorite holiday photo share. See you there. And, we have lots of small groups/adventure groups at The Place. Check out all the groups on-line or in the flyer in the lobby of The Place.

If you haven't joined an adventure group or small group yet, please remember that there are many groups that meet on a regular basis all over the Conejo Valley and even into the San Fernando Valley. Contact Pastor Simon for more information.

Christmas Stuff
We have a special Christmas program scheduled for Sabbath, December 22nd at The Place. There will be drama, special music, children's choir, and we will celebrate the season by singing Christmas carols.

We also have a Christmas/ New Years vespers & communion scheduled for Friday night, December 28th, please save the date!

Mommies Ministry
The mommies ministry will be having its annual Christmas celebration on Sunday morning, December 16th. This year's festivities will be held at Jolene Roeske's home in Westlake Village. The gathering will begin at 11 a.m. and will consist of a brunch and gift exchange. You may sign up to bring food with Cecilia at cecilialiversidge@hotmail.com and the limit for the gift exchange is $15. We look forward to this time together.

There will also be a mommy and child outing next Tuesday, December 11th to the Thousand Oaks Botanical Gardens. We will meet in the front area at 11 a.m.
